Info: What is the musical past, and how do composers reckon with it? Tonight’s programme brings this challenge into focus with the works of two composers who grappled with the past in divergent ways: Stravinsky did it through imitation and parody, and Mahler through imbrication.

Stravinsky’s Concerto for Orchestra, ‘Dumbarton Oaks’ was written in 1937-8. He wrote, however, as an homage to Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti – yet in his own whimsical and irreverent way.

Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) address musical time in a different way: by traveling through it., and weaving threads of the past into the present. We leave this final connection to time as a surprise for the audience to discover for themselves.
